I tried Genki. I gave up in a couple of weeks. I tried Japanese From Zero. I made it a month before losing focus. I tried Genki again; same result. Then I tried Tobira and now after 2 months (~1.5-2 hrs a day), I'm not only continuing, but going STRONG. I'm halfway through book 1 and my motivation hasn't waned.And after Lesson 2, they stop for katakana too. Kanji study begins from Lesson 3 onward. I just got my Tobira Textbook and already read through the "How to use Tobira" part. Yet i don't know if there is an answer key available as I havent found one in the book. Furthermore I can't find answers for the worksheets provided on the Tobira Website.So is Tobira, and probably several other reasonable textbooks, so I don't think that's much of an argument for anything in particular. Personally I found Tobira: Gateway to Intermediate Japanese significantly better as a self-study textbook, so I suspect their Intro book would be my preference if I were choosing today.
