My latest foray into the hobby of shooting is developing an accurate smokeless load for my new Pedersoli Sharps rifle in 45-70. I will go the black powder rout eventually but for now to save money (BP is expensive) and the extra case cleaning requirements for black powder ...
500gr pills in 45-70 and starting load of 50 grains of AR2208/Varget is a no go and I strongly suspect dangerous. Aug 4, 2018 · Cast boolits typically use faster powders than jacketed bullets do due to their greater ease in passage through the barrel. 4320 is a couple of steps faster than 4350. Powders burn best within their own particular pressure range. The 45-70 would not be able to achieve 4350's ideal pressure level with a cast boolit.

I am casting my own 405g Boolit's, using a Lee 405 standard base mold! Using Wheel weights and dropping in water as soon as cast! Loading as poured and not sizing!The .45-70 Mike has written about most recently in Handloader magazine is the Shiloh Model 1877. The cast HPs mentioned above came from Lyman mould 457122, weighing 336 grains of 1:20 tin-to-lead alloy. I learned that those bullets over 68 grains of GOEX FFg black powder were fine for small Texas whitetails.

I think Lil Gun is too fast of a burning powder for the 45-70. It is a high pressure powder. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it.
