#1. I am working on a 1995 50 HP 3 cylinder Johnson outboard. Initially the motor was not firing on the 3rd cylinder. The motor would get up on step and drop rpm and then it would kick in again. Very sporatic. There is good compression in all 3 cylinders. All 3 ignition coils are working. I changed out the timer base.To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. I will re-set it with the Joe Reeves Method tomorrow to 30 degrees, that is, the Joe Reeves Method but minus 0 degrees.
