My understanding of antenna design is VERY limited but I think what you're describing is adding a simple random length long wire antenna to a dipole antenna. If you were to make it exactly a multiple of the wavelength you were trying to pick up, it might work better but I believe most antennas are designed for a 1/2 wavelength.
