Turn the key to the "On" position for a few seconds while the fuel pump runs (can hear it in some GM vehicles- I haven't noticed it in the Malibu) to let it build up pressure, then over the Start. I just bought a 89 S-10 5SPD with the 2.5L the motor cranks the fuel pump primes and pumps fuel to the injector but the injector is not firing. Also I'm not getting spark,so I put a spark tester inline with the spark plugs nothing, I put it on the coil to dizzy nothing ...P1682 means that the ECM has detected a voltage difference between its 2 electrical feeds. One is hot at all times, the other is the Start. Since it's electrical, start with the battery and the cables. Make sure they're clean, and that the grounds are all there, all bolted solid, and all clean.

To begin though, shoot some starter fluid down the air filter intake while cranking it over, if it starts and dies you have fuel problem. If nothing happens then its a spark problem. Diagnosis saves $$$$.
