To keep him loyal and have someone who can keep the men in line. Duncan, as wise and capable as he was, didn't seem to have the men's respect and loyalty. I thought if I didn't chose Royland, he could have easily have most or all of the Forresters soldiers to join him in a rebellion or desertion.
