The widespread use of Glock's in militaries and LE along with the simplicity of the design and ease to repair and replace parts put Glock well ahead of other competitors.

There isn't a real capacity advantage for the Glock either, as Mecgar (the OEM for Sig mags) makes flush fit 15 rounders for the P228/P229.The XD/XDm 3.8 compacts are closest in size to the G19. If you wanna talk about "plastic toys" though, the Glock is more so than the XD. Stock Glocks use polymer magazines and guide rods, whereas the XDs' are stainless steel. Any XD counterpart to a Glock will weigh at least 6oz more.
